Can anyone recommend a good smartphone for me?

I will be going off to college in August and my life is already unorganized as is. Can anyone recommend a good smartphone or pda? I've researched a bunch and there are so many choices but i dont know what one to get. I only want to get at&t phones because of their pay as you go voice plan.
