How much would a decent to nice paint job cost?

My friend built a mid 80's BMW for auto cross racing and he had it painted at one of those trade schools. They worked out all the dings and painted everything. What separated it out from the cheap maco's was they did the inside the door frames, gas filler cap, trunk and hood, etc. I believe it was 600 or something like that. Other people have used a detention center where they do the same thing.
